How Does Side Impact Zone Coverage Work?

Side Swipe Accidents are one of the most common types of road accidents. According to a recent Budget Direct survey 35% of respondents who had been involved in an accident stated it was a side‑swipe* — making it the second most common collision type, after nose‑to‑tail incidents.
To help capture incidents occurring on the sides of your vehicle, Navman became the first dash cam brand in Australia and New Zealand to introduce Side Impact Zone Coverage. This feature is available on the Navman MiVue™ True 4K Pro Surround and the new MiVue™ Smart True 4K Surround.

What Is Side Impact Zone Coverage?
Side Impact Zone Coverage is a dash cam feature that records activity occurring on both sides of your vehicle, helping capture evidence of incidents that may not be visible through traditional front- and rear-facing cameras.
This additional coverage can be valuable for recording:
- Side-swipe accidents
- T-bone collisions
- Aggressive lane changes
- Vehicles merging into your lane
- The cause of damage on the sides of your car while parked
How Does Side Impact Zone Coverage Work?
Navman dash cams with Side Impact Zone Coverage use a three-camera recording system, however they avoid adding unnecessary clutter to a vehicle. This is achieved by integrating the side impact zone camera into the rear camera unit, eliminating the need for an additional standalone cameras mounted around the vehicle.
The side-impact view is captured using a super wide-angle, interior-facing lens with a 170-degree field of view. Recording through the vehicle’s side windows, the camera captures activity on both sides of the vehicle.
By monitoring these areas, the system can record incidents that are often missed by conventional two-channel dash cams, providing a more complete picture of what happened before, during, and after an accident.
Side Impact Coverage During Parking Mode
If you have installed the Smart Parking 12V Hardwiring Kit that enables parking mode, side impact zone coverage will capture any damage that happens to the sides of your vehicle while it is parked.
This can help capture incidents such as:
- Car doors hitting the side of your vehicle
- Vehicles scraping or side-swiping your car in a car park
- Hit-and-run incidents that occur while unattended
- Suspicious activity

For drivers seeking more comprehensive protection, Side Impact Zone Coverage offers an extra layer of protection that can help clarify how an incident occurred, support insurance claims and save you from paying unnecessary excess and repair costs.
